Having a literal pain in the butt is not a fun experience; it can make walking, sitting and sleeping difficult and uncomfortable. It is certainly something that one would want gone as soon as possible, yet sometimes we unknowingly exacerbate the issue by trying to stretch the injured area. There is a special name for these types of practices — anga bangha. It basically means that you want to do something good but end up hurting yourself. Today we will explore three types of the pain in the butt and how you can avoid making your practice anga bangha. Many years ago I was preparing for a fitness competition and my routine included a split. I did manage to get out of the split, but ended up limping for couple of weeks and then dealing with the pain in the butt for months afterwards. This is the pain that you experience right in the crease of the buttock at the back of the thigh. It might give you trouble when you walk, but becomes especially pronounced when you bend forward with legs straight. This type of pain is usually a sign of an injury to the tendon s that attach your hamstrings to the pelvis. When yoga practitioners insist on keeping the legs straight in forward bends and then force themselves into a pose, they may end up injuring the tendon. Yoga teachers who demonstrate a lot in their classes are also at risk, since they are more likely to go into a difficult posture without proper preparation. Here is the paradox — when the tendon becomes injured, the hamstring muscles naturally contract, trying to prevent further damage to the tendon. And we think — my hamstrings feel tight and painful, if I only stretch them the pain will go...

I believe I have what you have diagnosed as Periformis Syndrome. I developed it maybe a year ago and it wasn't as constant or severe as it is now. I would get it from time to time. I have a sit down job and find that it is worse upon sitting for long periods of time. Although when it really flares up even long hours of standing in one place ex: It is a sharp stabbing pain in the left side of the buttocks and if it is severe enough I get sciatica pain down the left side of the leg to the knee. Hot and cold packs relieve the pain but then it starts all over again. Sleeping on that side for any length of time will cause the pain as well and it will cause me to wake. I have been seeing a chiropractor for years but it helps for a day and then it returns. I don't hold an adjustment and he always tells me my pelvis is off. When he applies deep tissue pressure to the area, I do find relief so I know whatever he his is doing it is working. He recommended doing the PS stretching exercises. I also saw them on your site as well and doing the others as well. Sometimes I find even walking is irritating to that area especially if its inflamed. My questions to you is does this condition ever go away with the tissue remodeling and stretching exercises? Does a sedentary job cause this? What are the other causes of this condition? Thank you for all the great information on your website. It helped to understand this particular condition that I never heard of before. Hello Diane, In a nutshell, yes and yes. To see examples, start looking...

You probably never gave your tailbone a single thought, until it started to hurt. Tailbone pain is centered at the very bottom of your spine , right above your buttocks, where this multi-segmented bone sits. The tailbone is small, but it does have a few important jobs. It helps to stabilize you when you sit, and many tendons, muscles, and ligaments run through the area. Your doctor might call your tailbone by its medical name: Pain in your coccyx is called coccydynia. Pain from an injured tailbone can range from mild to intense. The pain can get worse when you sit down or stand up from a chair, or when you lean back while sitting. You can also feel soreness when you use the bathroom or have sex. Women may feel discomfort in that area during their period. Sometimes the pain can shoot all the way down your legs. Standing or walking should relieve the pressure on your tailbone and ease discomfort. Your tailbone might have started hurting after something as simple as sitting on a hard bench or other uncomfortable surface for a long period of time. Falls and other traumas can bruise , dislocate, or break your tailbone. Joint damage from repetitive motions or general wear and tear from aging can also contribute to tailbone pain. During the last trimester of pregnancy , the ligaments connected to and around the coccyx naturally loosen to make room for the baby. See your doctor if the pain is severe or lasts more than a few days. It can sometimes be a sign of an injury. In very rare cases, tailbone pain can be a sign of cancer. You may get an X-ray or MRI scan to look for signs of injury, such as a bone fracture or a tumor pressing...
